ABSTRACT

Formulas directly quantifying the effects of vegetation on sediment transport rates are scarce. Most work focuses on the hydrodynamic behavior of vegetated beds with special attention on the assessment of their hydraulic resistance. This is then used in existing sediment transport formulas, derived for unvegetated conditions, to compute the sediment transport rate. A study by Armanini & Cavedon (2019) proposes a new expression of Einstein’s flow intensity parameter to directly consider the presence of emerging vegetation in the transport formulas. An extension of this parameter is here proposed to also include submerged vegetation. Calibration and validation of this new flow intensity parameter extension will be based on new data collected via an experimental program in a tilting flume with mobile bed in which plants are represented by aluminum cylinders and on data from published experiments.
