ABSTRACT

LPTV in Alaska demonstrates a unique concept in delivering network programming to the population of the state. The State of Alaska delivers network programming (ABC, CBS, NBC, and PBS) to Alaska’s citizens using a separate network distribution system that utilizes satellite and LPTV technology. An investigation into the operation of the Alaska television network allows observers to see the impact of new technology, especially satellite technology and LPTV network technology, on the distribution of programming to the sparsely scattered and diverse populations of Alaska. This chapter investigates the history and development of networked television in Alaska, which uses low power transmission technology as part of its distribution system. It also describes the current status of LPTV in Alaska and comments on the future possibilities for telecommunication services there. Telecommunication services in Alaska depend upon the infrastructure established by the LPTV network.
