ABSTRACT

Understanding and describing the diverse manifestations of the human condition is at the heart of the science known as anthropology (Lévi-Strauss, 1985). Behaviors such as language use, communication systems, wedding and funerary rituals, religious or spiritual beliefs, or articles of use such as tools and artifacts are examined to help illuminate similar and distinguishing characteristics between and among human populations. Anthropology provides a detailed and complex view of the human species and its development causing many to question the long-held idea of cultural progression from “primitive” to “advanced.”
