ABSTRACT

The educational benefit of conducting a research study has already been noted. However, it is up to the individual student to obtain the maximum self-development from the research project. A key factor in this respect is the choice of research topic. Other things being equal, a project that is closely allied with the student’s career aims is better than one that has no obvious relevance. Thus students who intend to pursue careers as, for example, business consultants, are clearly well advised to familiarise themselves with the ‘state of the art’ in some field which has high relevance to the future rather than studying a topic which has little interest to practitioners.
