ABSTRACT

Self-assessment, to be effective, should consider an individual’s work-related values, interests, personality type, and aptitudes. These personal characteristics make up who you are, and are typically considered when thinking about what to study in school or what career to pursue. Another context in which self-assessment is essential is when a performance evaluation system requires input from the individual, not just your supervisor. Several factors need to be considered, and ignoring the facts about yourself won’t give you an accurate picture. In the context of this book and specifically in the context of this chapter, the discussion includes how to evaluate the competencies you need now and those to anticipate as your role and career evolve. Chapter 4 focuses on how to do an initial self-assessment and then how to regularly update the self-assessment by providing worksheets to help you assess your proficiency level and how important the competencies are to you and your future. Suggestions for establishing a professional development plan are presented. Distinctions between formal and informal assessments are made as are suggestions for how to regularly update your self-assessment.
