ABSTRACT

This chapter builds on the existing analysis of Rhizome's ArtBase collection and goes on to consider audiences both for the online collection and physical exhibitions related to Rhizome and the New Museum. Rhizome's ArtBase is one of the largest and longest-running online collections of self-submitted artworks. BGRhizome's ArtBase is an online collection/archive of art, with more than 2,000 artworks included since 1991. BGBen Fino-Radin has described how his role as Digital Conservator of an online collection of new media art has caused him to question the different roles of conservator, curator, and exhibitor. In an interview with Caitlin Jones, Lauren Cornell talks about the challenges of translating into the physical, and how ArtBase systems such as contracts are aimed at facilitating physical and well as online exhibition. The New Museum was founded as an organization challenging the very idea of a museum by focusing on the contemporary.
