ABSTRACT

Many tutors shudder at the thought of having to undertake the policing roles of checking uniform, equipment, homework, signing planners or diaries and so on. This way, much of that tedious administrative stuff is done by students’ self-managing group. Get the students to work in pairs to come up with all the things that must be done in tutor time. Each team leader looks at their team’s planners. They have their own grid with scores for each person named on their grid. The team leader should point out any notes for the tutor to respond to, sign or note for action. As the year progresses the teams should settle into the routines of the group and move into the ‘performing’ mode of team work. They can start to take on other jobs such as organising tutor quizzes, running assemblies, supporting charities, raising money and taking part in other house based activities.
