ABSTRACT

The coat is being offered another life in Trim's wardrobe, and as such it connects all the veterans beyond a lifespan. With the aim of prolonging the life of clothes, transfer is a means to strengthen family or friendship ties. Though endowed with a sense of novelty and desire to prolong life recycling partly originates from the individual's experience of absence. Cycles of novelty in the material world of Sterne's fiction echo the way the author frequently compares his writings to a vehicle in constant motion. Recycled shreds and clippings of the material world are in keeping with an overall pattern that fosters cycles of novelty and partakes of a constant sense of regeneration. Outside dress, other material elements are circulated, and A Sentimental Journey is rife with circulating objects. The link of the word "bridge" with recycling connects the plastic dimension of the body and the material plasticity of words, only to show more blatantly the latter's weakness.
