ABSTRACT
The next fifteen years (1968-82) were the era of the exclusive specialist clinic. Most doctors withdrew their labour from this unpopular area, and referral to one of the new specialist clinics became an almost automatic 'disposal'. Despite increasing evidence that the clinics were not coping adequately with the drug problem, the view prevailed that only specialist drug services could deal with this particular patient group.
