ABSTRACT

This client workbook chapter corresponds to Session 10 of Emotion Regulation Treatment of Alcohol Use Disorders. In Chapter 12, the therapist begins by reviewing the client’s progress towards meeting the treatment goals. For goals met, the therapist reviews strategies that helped to produce the desired changes. For goals that have not yet been fully met, the therapist discusses barriers or obstacles to change and, using the problem-solving method, works with the client to develop a plan to address the problem area. Next, the topic of stimulus control is introduced. Stimulus control involves making changes in a person’s physical environment that can help reduce the temptation to drink and, by doing that, reduce the risk for drinking. A list of stimulus control strategies used successfully by others is reviewed and the client develops several strategies that could work for their unique situation. Finally, the client participates in the fourth session of imaginal exposure to unpleasant emotions associated with drinking. At the end of the session, between-session skill practice is assigned.
