ABSTRACT

This client workbook chapter corresponds to Session 3 of Emotion Regulation Treatment of Alcohol Use Disorders. In Chapter 5, the client and therapist discuss the topic of high-risk drinking situations. A high-risk situation can be any situation that increases the likelihood of drinking. The client and therapist spend time working together to identify the client’s unique high-risk drinking situations. Next, the topic of alcohol cravings, also referred to as urges, is discussed. Finally, the client is introduced to the following mindful coping skills; (1) Watch the Wave (also known as Urge Surfing), (2) Mindful Breathing, and (3) Mindful Moments. These skills are used to manage both emotions and urges and cravings. At the end of the session, between-session skill practice is assigned.
