ABSTRACT
This chapter describes the first three stages that are to be the leadership zone namely ignorance, arrogance, and absencing. It is a leader's job to ensure that their organization does not enter these stages and it's the most critical part of setting direction. There is an element of vulnerability in engaging people in a proposal mode in that our closely held truths could be proven wrong. That is a good thing. It is, in fact, the point of creating an interrogation of reality. It's important to note that allowing oneself to be vulnerable is in itself a leadership act that requires courage. Reality is constructed in the brain and through mental models reinforced by the language one use. The chapter explores a leader's reality and develops a six-component model for setting direction for an organization. A leader not only sets direction for an organization, but communicates it to everyone in the organization in a way that creates energy and enthusiasm.
