ABSTRACT

Howpeopleperformtheirtasksdependsonanumberoffactorsbeyondtheirown control,theirmotivationandtheirability.TheGIHREprojectfocusesonsmall teamsperforminghighlycriticaltasksundercomplexandoftendifficult circumstances.Whilesubsequentchapterswilldescriberesultswiththisfocus,i.e. bylookingattheinteractionamongteammembersfromvariousangles,thepresent chapterdealswiththeorganizationalandtask-relatedpreconditionsthatserveasan influentialframeworkfortheteam'sperformance.Wheninterpretingthefindings presentedinsubsequentchapters,thisframeworkhastobekeptinmind,e.g. leadershipmeanssomethingdifferentinateamoftwohighlyandsimilarlytrained pilotsthaninateamthatincorporatesseveralprofessionsandhierarchicallevels suchasamedicaloperatingteam.
