ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: The main objective of this paper is to explore the students’ perspectives on the use of sex-based grouping in English language teaching. The main idea of the paper is drawn from the literature on the gender differences in communication that has been much discussed in the literature of language and gender (Lakoff 1976, Tannen 1990). This research is based on the interview conducted to 12 students taken randomly from one class at one Senior High School in Makassar, Indonesia. Interviews were recorded and transcribed, and discussed in relation to the issues raised above. The results of this study showed that students have good perception toward the application of sex-based grouping. An important finding from this study was the preference of mixed group of men and women as a choice to accommodate the different learning strategies of female and male students.
