ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors make the argument that, until recently, sex offending has not been approached from a criminological perspective. It is argued that sex offending is first and foremost an antisocial behavior. For some reason, theoretical viewpoints, methodological perspectives and evidence-based policies and principles respective to explanation, description, and prevention of antisocial behavior have rarely been used in the context of sex offending. It is suggested that, on the one hand, a criminological perspective tackling the issues of explanation/prevention and, on the other, the sociolegal construction of the phenomenon could be beneficial to this field of research.
