ABSTRACT

About 66% of girls in the United Kingdom have experienced sexual attention or sexual or physical contact in a public place. One in eight large employers admits that sexual harassment in their companies goes unreported, according to a YouGov survey of 800 HR decision-makers about women's experiences at work. One of the reasons why the sexism feels so blatant in the example above is that it is inflicted on men, I think. I imagine that excluding females from things occurs so often that, like a screensaver, we fail to notice it. In No More Boys and Girls, one of the (male) pupils says, with a noticeable smirk, ‘Men are better because they're stronger, and they have the best jobs’. One of the girls says, ‘If you thought of a boy as being a nurse, it sounds a bit weird – and it would look a bit weird as well’.
