ABSTRACT

This chapter details the dynamic of tribalism and delineates its roots in evolutionary biology. In-group belongingness, crucial to survival, can also set the stage for diminished empathy and compassion towards the out-group, justifying and promoting dismissive and/or violent actions towards the “other.” In today’s climate, destructive systemic group dynamics can emerge as parallel processes in the treatment room. Skillful intervention is needed to decrease the risk of re-traumatization. This chapter provides a case vignette and suggestions for active intervention that reflect awareness of social justice, power and privilege and implicit bias around race, gender and class.
