ABSTRACT
Chapter Overview This chapter presents an overview of the main concepts and techniques for acquiring and processing images of shapes. Starting with image formation and representation by computers, the present chapter reviews several algorithms for image enhancement, noise filtering, edge detection and image segmentation, which can be applied to produce suitable representations of the shapes to be further analyzed.
