ABSTRACT
Chapter Overview The objective of the present chapter is to identify and discuss in some detail the main concepts and issues in shape analysis, concentrating on continuous shapes and addressing shape characterization and representation, operations between shapes, shape metrics, position and size normalization, transformations, equivalence and similarity under transformations, besides shape recognition and classification. These concepts are extended to spatially quantized shapes in the subsequent chapters.
