ABSTRACT
In this chapter we continue to explore what children do in their play as they find ways to share their thoughts and ideas and feelings with others, but now through the symbolic systems available to them – letters, words, numerals, symbols and signs. So we examine how children begin to use symbolic systems, invent and use rules relating to these and play the roles of reader, writer, audience, composer, scribe and explorer.
