ABSTRACT

This chapter identifies explicit ways in which specific persons, bodies, and groups in official government and unofficial sectors, such universities and other educational institutions, professional organizations, such as the Nigerian Bar Association, town and community groups, can contribute to improved justice in a reconstructed law and justice system. It explains the most vital areas in which constituent segments of a society, such as Nigeria, can make meaningful contributions towards law and justice renewal. The chapter explores what is required is to achieve reasonable balances between the public and private sectors of society as well as among the different institutions, groups, organizations, and individuals. An aggressive literacy program is necessary to help educate the citizens generally. The Nigerian Law Reform Commission (NLRC) needs to be fundamentally reorganized and its authority and power expanded. It is necessary to separate the office of the Attorney-General (A-G) from that of the Justice Minister, at the federal and state levels of government.
