ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the complicated context within which the Family Law Program (FLP) operates including some of the ways that abuse continues and is perpetuated within the legal system. It provides an overview of few different service delivery approaches and how the FLP service delivery model works to synthesize those approaches. The chapter suggests that a holistic service delivery model where a team of interdisciplinary professionals supports women’s attempts to navigate a confusing legal system, while recognizing the unique client needs that arise as a result of family violence, best serves FLP clients. It addresses common myths or misunderstandings of clients and service providers regarding what legal remedies are available and the extent to which those legal remedies alone can "solve the problem". Thus, the FLP’s ambition to adopt a truly holistic and trauma-informed model is tempered by institutional limits and intra-agency program mandates. While small organizations have some challenges in adopting a truly interdisciplinary approach, adaptations are possible.
