ABSTRACT

From The Actor: A Treatise on the Art of Playing (1750). John Hill, M.D. (1716?–75), who called himself ‘Sir John’, edited The British Magazine from 1746 to 1750 and contributed a daily letter called ‘The Inspector’ to The London Advertiser and Literary Gazette from 1751 to 1753. He quarrelled with Fielding, Garrick and Christopher Smart, but was, notwithstanding, a shrewd observer of the theatre.
