ABSTRACT
When Manuel Prado’s second term (1956-1962) finished, free elections were held, this time with full Aprista participation, with the result that Haya de la Torre won the race by a small margin over Belaunde Terry, Odria arriving in third place. But the tug of war between the Apra and the Right and the military was not finished. At the same time, guerrilla activity was rife, including dissident Aprista groups. The military, confronting this scenario, decided to intervene, claiming abuses on the part of Prado’s government in favor of Apra.
