ABSTRACT

Miguel had been around the block so many times he could pace himself to make all the green lights. Miguel knew who to call, at what time of day, when each month, and which individual within the agency to ask for a certain service. Miguel's strong Hispanic accent could be misleading. He had lived in the northeastern United States for twenty-five years. Despite the fact that he spoke, read, and understood English very well, he frequently apologized when asking questions, saying that he was "trying to learn the language." His shy, yet gracious manners and impeccable grooming invited nurturing. At the time Miguel first came to the clinic, he was fortyone years old. He had recently left prison, where he had served a two-year sentence for robbery.
