ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the status and management systems of some of the small scale community water supply systems (SSCWSS) based on the information gathered during the author's field visits, conducted in the period between the months of January and May, 2010. The Kwelaachhi SSCWSS at Chyasal in Lalitpur, named Gajalaxmi water supply system, was established in 2007 with the technical assistance of Urban Environment Management Society and through kind and cash contributions of local residents, after the stone spouts in that area went dry in 2005. J. Warner found the water quality of the dug wells and stone spouts of Kathmandu to be very low, with high levels of faecal coliform and nitrate. Based on the experiences of the privatization of the water supply system in the urban areas of Asia, Africa and Latin America, Jessica Budds and Gordon McGranahan noted that "privatization has achieved neither the scale nor benefits anticipated".
