ABSTRACT

Small schools often attract special children. The Code of Practice has been useful to people but it was, and continues to be, a costly business to implement in the school. Once decisions had been made about the needs of pupils, it required the involvement of the Special Educational Needs Coordinator in taking small groups. The Code of Practice is useful, but if people were to treat it as tablets of stone people would be unable to make provision for pupils like Mary and Susan. An argument between the educational psychologist and the school ensued. Maybe as a result of the reputation for catering for pupils with special educational needs, or for some other reason, the parents of a very special pupil approached people. In general, the Local Education Authority was ambivalent but happy to receive comment and argument from the school and parents.
