ABSTRACT

Difficulties in social communication and interpersonal interaction are considered to be defining characteristics of ASD. When working with adolescents and young adults at the secondary school level, it is especially critical that teachers provide high-quality chronologically age-appropriate experiences to build social communication competence. This chapter discusses practices that have been shown to improve communication competence by teachers in collaboration with communication and language therapists. The strategies presented are intended for implementation in classrooms and community-based instruction.
