ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the social and cultural attitudes of Indian youth and examines how liberal/conservative are their views. These attitudes are explored through their opinions on a variety of issues such as the notion of patriarchy, homosexuality, marriage, live-in relationships and dating, as well as discriminatory attitudes on the grounds of caste, religion, race and dietary preferences. However, it acknowledges the difficulty in positing the Indian youth in the stereotypical Western categories of liberal and conservative. Indian youth, much in consonance with the rest of Indian society, expresses shades of liberalism and conservatism.
