ABSTRACT

Exercises adapted from the practice of improv comedy can provide a foundation for powerful experiential classroom activities. This chapter discusses an activity that focuses on broadening counseling students' empathy for clients of various socioeconomic/class statuses. In this activity, two students at a time enact an improv scene for 3–5 minutes, while the other students watch. If students are very uncomfortable acting in front of the class, this activity can be done in pairs. The foundation of all improv scenes is an exercise called, "Yes, and" (as cited in Phillips Sheesley, Pfeffer, & Barish, 2016). The facilitator needs to Instruct students to focus on creating realistic scenes and that the goal is not to be funny or entertaining.
