ABSTRACT

A Zande man probably journeyed among his neighbours and also had some contact with foreigners, and this is seen in his readiness to borrow ideas and objects from them. Nevertheless the frontiers of the kingdom or independent chiefdom are the extent of the Zande commoner's social horizon and his range of “ effective ” social contacts is limited to the group of people among whom he lives-comprising the homestead and its extension, the group of homesteads collected around a deputy. If he leaves one chiefdom and settles in another he has to affiliate himself to a new group.
