ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we discuss the evolution of Wenger-Trayner’s social learning theory; our research and experiences planning, promoting, and assessing social learning spaces; and practical tools for coach developers to facilitate coach development using this approach. Practically, an organization interested in learning communities should enable a coach developer to promote and assess social learning initiatives aligned with its strategic goals. A coach developer could reflect on and ask the following questions: In what learning activities are coaches engaging? What have they learned? Have they tested what they learned in practice? What were the results? Has that changed their practice, identity, or the community?
