ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights anthropological methods, namely, direct observation and direct engagement (participation), which have shown their value in complementing sociological methodologies. I did not know it when I met Professor James Short (Jim) as an anthropology graduate student 50 years ago, but I now realize how much he came to influence my thinking and research through the value he placed on social observation and participation as a means of micro-level data collection. Jim sought details in micro-level processes and pathways that embolden (or not) adolescents toward delinquent behavior. Although he was a sociologist, he relied on many of the anthropological tools that are the focus of this chapter. He focused attention on delinquents’ personal social networks and relational ties, which he viewed as best captured through direct observation and interaction with delinquents.
