ABSTRACT

As those of you familiar with my work may know, I believe all planning is inherently and deeply political. Different planners and planning work are characterized by differing levels of explicitness and self-awareness as to the political thrust involved. But the work we all do is never free of values, ideas about good and bad social orders, and explicit or implicit strategies about how we move from our present state to the state we are trying to plan for (or against)—or in some cases, how we insure maximum stability for the status quo.
