ABSTRACT

In the previous chapter we looked at different versions of English, produced as a result, we suggested, of different conceptions of ‘ability’ held by teachers about their students. We concluded, perhaps too pessimistically, that one – among others – factor in this might be the diminishing autonomy of teachers under the ‘new dispensations’.
