ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the Social Quality in cities with similar living standards. In contrast to the dominant quantitative approach, we explore how Social Quality plays out in the experiences and perspectives of households. Qualitative semi-structured interviews conducted in 2008, 2009 and 2013 with the same 32 households in precarious prosperity in Lausanne and Zurich (in total 80 interviews) were reanalysed according to concepts of each of the quadrants that constitute the concept of Social Quality. Results suggest similar experiences in both cities, yet fine-grained differences in the way opportunities and strategies were phrased.
