ABSTRACT

In the physical and life sciences, there was quite a bit of overlap between science and mathematics, whereas in the social studies literature there tends to be greater overlap with reading and writing because these are major tools in the domain, particularly with regard to history. Three specific areas of social studies have received more attention in the literature with regard to domain-specific strategies: historical inquiry, geography, and government and politics. In government and politics there has been a focus on social interaction strategies to understand domain processes. Three such strategies include simulations such as Model UN and Mock Trial. Simulations are learning environments in which the features of a typical domain problem are structured in such a way as to enable learners to extract key features of that problem. Model UN simulations can give students the opportunity to engage in negotiation strategies, argumentation strategies, and consensus building strategies.
