ABSTRACT

It is now in order to consider whether the same result may not be attained without the use of any sanctions whatever. This calls for a study of the social role of suggestion. The force of suggestion depends somewhat on bodily and mental condition. The source of suggestion is a vital matter. The strange power of the individual of authority or prestige to impose his will on others is well known. It is its cumulative aspect that makes social suggestion emanating from the community at large the chief kind to be considered in connection with the conduct of adults. Besides exalting the tone of social suggestion, society interposes to exclude counter-suggestion. The striking influence of suggestion on the animal instincts long ago established a reserve in sexual matters which is now being extended to other lines of conduct.
