ABSTRACT

In Chapter 3, the embodied perspective on affluent consumption is related to sociological stress theory. More specifically, this chapter outlines affluent consumer role strains in terms of chronic affluent consumer stress in a consumer culture context and consumer stress coping, i.e. efforts to restore bodily balance that follow from a marketplace stressor-induced disequilibrium. Alternative coping strategies, active coping oriented toward modifying the stressor and avoidance coping that aims to reduce the tension caused by the stressor are elaborated on in the affluent consumption context. An embodied stress model is presented in which marketplace-induced stressors are coped with line with the idea of the intentional arc.
