ABSTRACT

Fox River used three standard software packages to do their accounting: Sage Line 100 was used for book-keeping and producing the monthly and yearly financial accounts; Synergist was used for contract costing and performance evaluation; and Microsoft Excel was used to derive and analyse accounting values for the Sage accounts as well as to design the new revenue recognition system. Conversely, Sara needed authorization from Caroline before the set-up and use of any new codes in the chart of accounts, and the Sage monthly accounts could only be closed off by head office once the accounts were approved. Head office maintained the accounting software as part of their provision of IT services to Fox River. It was Brad who determined what accounting software and which version of that software that Fox River was to use. The chapter describes the scientists instead focused their attention on Synergist and Excel financial software which did not require knowledge of the double-entry system.
