ABSTRACT

Dairymen generally are confused by talk about relation of somatic cells, their origin, function, and the interpretation of their numbers. The Wisconsin Mastitis Test takes the sample of milk like the California Mastitis Test and puts the milk in a tube. A somatic cell count tells the dairyman just how much more milk is in those cows. Mastitis is no different there than in south-western Missouri or north-western Arkansas when it comes to going up into the udders and trying to find the bugs and irritation. The main thing to observe is that between milking times the alveolus fills up with milk that is extruded from each of the cells lining the lumen. The researchers also kept track of all the people who said that they were tired of paying $6.50 for teat dip because they hadn't had a case of mastitis in years so had quit teat dipping.
