ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an example of a contingent somatic dialogical inquiry into vitality affects with an 82-year-old man struggling with pain and sorrow in the last stages of cancer. The dialogue of a somatic inquiry is a phenomenological approach to exploring lived experience that seeks to uncover and repair interruptions in the right hemisphere's innate processing system. Part of what makes somatic inquiry an effective tool for healing trauma is its moment-to-moment dialogical approach. Somatic inquiry begins in the knowledge gleaned through somatic empathy and the intersubjective field. Somatic inquiry into lived experience supports the differentiation of trauma states from vitality affects. The methodology of conducting a somatic inquiry with a person suffering from trauma involves several levels of right-hemispheric processing. Using somatic awareness, practitioners first establish an embodied empathic connection and an intersubjective field. A somatic inquiry is energized by authentic interest, wonder, love, and feeling felt.
