ABSTRACT
A sonic ecology that engages human interactions with soundscapes and other sonic experiences suggests that the immediacy of experiences with sound can actually help writers develop empathy, a capacity that can lead to activism. In rhetoric and writing studies, sonic rhetorics, especially for digital composition, have seen increasing interest and attention. Sound is an important rhetorical resource, but a critical approach to sonic rhetoric needs to include embodied, dynamic rhetorical engagements with sound itself. Recent rhetorical studies have examined sound-only productions, installations and public artworks that disrupt or challenge people expectations to "disorient listeners" from their usual "auditory tactics". When composing with sound, the digital technologies themselves and their visual representations within the software's interface can thus allow for both limited and increased possibilities. Technologies and the various digital tools and interfaces mediate sounds and offer strategies for how to manipulate the characteristics and qualities of sound.
