ABSTRACT

Transportation modes vary greatly in both the space they require and the impacts they impose at various levels, from local neighborhoods, through the region as a whole, up to the entire ecosystem. No evaluation of a major project would be complete that did not consider the relative space consumption and array of potential impacts of various project alternatives. In many countries and regions, elaborate processes are in place to ensure these are not neglected. Because of increasing fi nancial and environmental pressures, jurisdictions that currently have poorly developed or poorly regulated public transport systems and/or weak landuse regulations can be expected to also begin requiring assessments of space impacts from transportation projects.
