Oursubjectiveexperiencetellsusthatasoundshouldhavelocatedness,a feelingthatasoundhasasourcefromwhichitemanates.Thetruelocation ofthatsourcemaybedifferentfromthelocationassignedbylistening.Ina reverberant room, for example, it may be very difcult to locate the source ofatonalsound.However,wecanformauditoryeventlocationsthatare differentfromthesoundsourcelocation.Themostobviousdiscrepancy isnotedinthecaseofheadphonelistening.Inspiteofthesoundsources mountedattheears,wecanstillhaveauditoryeventsthatappearinsidethe head or that are externalized to the ears.
