ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the populations having criminal justice system involvement who, because of their status, require specialized knowledge and skills. Criminal justice system involves populations, persons living in poverty, persons with disabilities, and minority racial and ethnic groups are most vulnerable to social exclusion. Tribal criminal justice systems include: tribal detention facilities, tribal victim services, tribal court judge selection and tribal courts, and tribal law enforcement and corrections. Social workers provide services to both status offenders and juvenile delinquents. It is important to keep in mind that these are two distinct and separate categories, and to be aware of these issues as services are provided to juveniles and their families. Veterans from all branches of military service may experience criminal justice system involvement upon their return home. Within the military, military police, and courts exist, although returning veterans are likely to become involved with local criminal justice systems.
