ABSTRACT

There are many specialized methods of polymer synthesis that do not fit easily into the mainstream types of polymerization described in Chapters 3 through 7. The purpose of this chapter is to provide a simple introduction to some that currently are of considerable interest, each type being described briefly with some examples of its use. The treatment is far from exhaustive, so reviews and original papers will need to be consulted in order to gain a deeper understanding and knowledge. There also are many other types of specialized polymerization which are not covered here, such as template polymerization, polymerization in clathrates, cyclopolymerization and plasma polymerization, but for which information can be found in reviews and advanced textbooks.
