ABSTRACT

The National Literacy Strategy (NLS) appears to have settled the issues surrounding nomenclature for schools and children in the United Kingdom (UK) when it ordained that pupils should 'investigate and learn spelling rules'. Justification for teaching spelling rules was confirmed by Boder's study of pupils with dyslexia, which established that those who knew spelling rules made fewer errors and that their errors were good phonetic approximations making it easier to comprehend their meaning. Written activities should be introduced as soon as possible for individual spellings to enhance multi-sensory learning. Games and puzzles can be used to reinforce and learn individual vowel sounds. Vowels are the most important letters, not least because every word has to have at least one vowel sound. Vowels are the most frequently misspelt letters. In other words using the simultaneous-oral-spelling method (S-O-S) is the classic multi-sensory spelling method to help develop spelling knowledge and skills.
