ABSTRACT

Significant reviews on spirituality, intimate partner dyads and family exist (e.g., Burr, Marks and Day 2012; Falicov 2009; Mahoney 2010, 2012; Mahoney and Cano 2014; Mahoney and Krumrei 2012; Mahoney, Pargament, Tarakeshwar and Swank 2008; Walsh 2009, 2012; Wiggins 2012). In general, greater individual level (e.g., attendance, affiliation, salience) and greater dyad level spirituality (e.g., shared beliefs, prayer for other, virtues [e.g., interpersonal forgiveness]; joint attendance) is associated with greater couple well-being (i.e., satisfaction, commitment, lower divorce; Mahoney 2010; Mahoney et al. 2008; Olson, Marshall, Goddard and Schramm 2015). Similarly, increased individual and increased dyadic level spirituality (e.g., spiritual communication, imbuing family relationship with sacredness [e.g., manifestation of God]) correspond with increased parent-child well-being (i.e., authoritative parenting, affection, closeness, positive exchanges; Mahoney 2010; Mahoney et al. 2008).
