Spirituality, in one of the prominent received views of it, is primarily an epistemic notion implying a search for deep self-knowledge, a knowledge of the truth of oneself which is also a knowledge of God. A necessary condition of such knowledge is the knower’s unflinching commitment to the moral life – a life of truth and ahimsa. Moreover, for Gandhi genuine, authentic spirituality must permeate the mundane day-to-day ethical life of the subject. Gandhi’s account of the proper relationship between different religions as equal respect for each other must be considered in the light of his view of spirituality and the moral life.
